Timberplay Ltd are world-renowned natural playground designers, manufacturers, and installation experts. Catering for markets across the UK, the Middle East to India their playgrounds are visually striking, instantly recognisable, and see children and families coming back to them time and time again. Timberplay’s offer and design process is driven fromo four key principles: diversity of products; utilising a landscape-led approach; bespoke product design (with a specialist focus on inclusive design); and ‘Play Value’. Founded in 2000 it was these key principles that established Timberplay and saw them appointed as the chosen supplier for the prestigious Princess Diana Play Area in Kensington Gardens.
Field have worked with Timberplay across to numerous projects, covering their print based offer (both for the UK and International market) and their digital presence across their suite of three websites. At the beginning of this process Field started with a brand interrogation. The Timberplay brand had evolved naturally in-house – resulting in no clear direction, identity, font selection or colour palette. Field began first with the Timberplay logotype. This is physically etched into playgrounds across the world, so it wasn’t right to start from scratch. Instead the simplicity of separating the tree marque (synonymous to much of Timberplay’s sustainable offer) from the logotype itself not only gave Timberplay a much more confident and legible logotype, but allowed for a flagship marque for the brand.
With a revised logotype and marque the next challenge was to convey Timberplay’s offer of ‘Play Value – the amount of fun a child can have from a single piece of equipment’, whilst incorporating the natural factor. Timberplay are led by the natural environment when designing a playground, and are the sole supplier of the sustainable, world-renowned outdoor playground equipment manufacturer, Richter Spielgeräte. Richter uphold the highest operational values and manufacturing principles to ensure that child-led design is at their forefront and that all their materials are sustainably sourced. The above led to an earthy, yet still vivid colour palette. Children’s scribbles reminiscent of the shapes and silhouettes found in the playgrounds became prominent aspects to the brand. The physicality and ‘challenging play element’ of Timberplay’s playgrounds comes across when flicking through a printed brochure as equally as it does when using their websites.
Field delivered a suite of three websites for Timberplay in 2021. This spanned both their UK offer across England, Scotland, Ireland and demonstrated their international offer to the Middle East, United States and India. One specialist aspect of the sites is they all connect to a central DRM server with 24 hour synchronisation to the extensive (1000+) Richter Spielgeräte catalogue. The site can be navigated in numerous ways – case studies show off Timberplay’s eclectic portfolio and allow you to navigate to the products used within those specific sites, and a products-specific section divides Richter’s catalogue into 10 categories that then have further specialist sub divisions.
Abbey Kirwin, Former Marketing Manager, Timberplay Ltd.I could not recommend working with the team at Field more highly. From day one they took time out to ensure they understood not only our brief but our company culture and values in order to create assets appropriate for who Timberplay are. When looking into the graphic systems and library of assets Field’s in-depth work allowed changes that could be implemented across the company. The new Timberplay website has had nothing but great reviews and has made our service to customers so much easier. Our brand is now reflective of the the high-end, bespoke company we are within our sector.
Angus MacKenzie, Head of Design, FieldI think we’ve managed to channel a sense of wonder, curiosity and childlike excitement into the Timberplay brand. From the Richter rough prototype product sketches to the bold and bright website menu the brand conveys the enthusiasm to get outside, play, run around and have fun!
