Royal Life Saving Society
A nationwide film and animation campaign to help educate children around water safety
The Royal Life Saving Society is the UK's leading provider of water safety and drowning prevention education, established over 100 years ago with the support of the Royal family. The RLSS approached Field to develop a suite of videos and digital tools to educate kids on the dangers of being around different bodies of water, which have since been rolled out nationwide.
We art directed the entire project, organising filming on location around South Yorkshire and on set with a green screen. The completed films are created using a combination of digital vectors, collaged textural backgrounds and video footage, creating a surreal environment that exists half in and half out of reality. Using seven scenarios focused around different dangers found near bodies of water, we conceptualised storyboards and worked with a local young drama group to produce the project.
Alongside the film and animation campaign, we also developed a custom website with interactive activities such a “Spot The Hazards” tool, where users can test their new found knowledge of water safety to guess where potential hazards may be lurking in a safe, virtual way. We also developed a simple infinite scroller game in Unity where a user has to avoid a set of oncoming hazards to try and get a high score.
